This type of bookend is mainly used in the Islamic world to read or recite the Koran. The book is placed open on the support and the reader can read comfortably without constantly having to hold the book in his hand.

As is usual with Koran stands of this type, it consists of two parts that can be moved against each other by means of a hinge. In a complicated manufacturing process, the two parts have to be machined from one sheet by separating them and sawing in the hinge. It can be opened like scissors up to an angle of approx. 60°. The support surface for the Koran is usually left smooth, while the outside is carved with rosette decoration.
The foot parts are perforated or have a niche-shaped recess.
