Pietra dura (It. "hard stone") - "Florentine mosaic", the art of laying pictures and ornaments from plates made of hard types of stone (agate, chalcedony, jasper, lapis lazuli, as well as mother-of-pearl and coral).

Unlike the classic mosaic art of colorful cubes or pins, the pietra dura process uses precisely fitted moldings that correspond to the larger fragments of the composition. Mastic putty is used as an adhesive. Finished mosaics are ground mirror smooth. This creates particularly resistant, durable decorative surfaces. The pietra dura craft flourished in the 16th century, especially in Florence. Small pietra dura souvenirs are still made in Florence today

The largest collection of Pietra Dura objects is on the walls of the octagonal Medici Chapel (Cappella dei Principi) in Florence's San Lorenzo church. The process is not only found in Italy, but has even reached India. The Taj Mahal was also decorated in this way.

This Pietra Dura table is a real rarity. A dream from the kingdom of 1001 nights for your living room.
