Very special are the wool embroideries on the entire front of the cushion. It has a unique pattern.
A very typical male profession in Kashmiri is that of the embroiderer. You work with an awl (= ari), which is faster than with a needle.
Ari embroidery (chain stitch) is used to decorate woolen scarves, clothing, cushion covers, and curtain or upholstery fabrics. Wool is usually used to embroider on coarse cotton fabric, but silk and cotton threads are also used for scarves and dress fabrics.
The motifs range from stylized flowers and birds to kilim patterns. The individual patterns are only shown in outline or over the entire surface (e.g. carpets).
