Sumac Kilim
Sumakh carpets are flat weaves, i.e. kilims. They are named after the capital Shemkha in the Shirvan district. The sumakh of Caucasian provenance are becoming rarer from year to year and hardly ever newly produced. The sumakh differs from the much more common slit kilim in weaving technique. The sumakh is easily recognizable by the threads that are not cut off close to the fabric but are left hanging loose by 5-10 cm. Since the kilims were specially made as a floor covering for tents, this "air cushion" gave the sumakh an increased insulating effect against moisture and cold. Due to this peculiarity, the sumakh can only be used on one side, in contrast to the slit kilim (called "palas" in the Caucasus). On the other hand, more finely structured patterns are possible with the sumakh technique, which come very close to the "normal" knotted carpet.
