Khotan carpet, flooring handwoven in or around the ancient city of Khotan (Hotan) in the southern Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang (Chinese Turkistan). Khotan carpets were once called Samarkand carpets after the Central Asian trading center. They combine Chinese details with Central Asian design schemes and vivid western colors, except when more recent fugitive dyes have reduced their effect to washed-out pastels. The technique of Khotan carpets was to some extent influenced by the earlier carpets of Persia, but the decoration generally consists of lattice designs with tufts of rosettes. Similar designs were used for wool carpets, along with triple medallion schemes in blue on red, pomegranate vines growing out of small vases, or perhaps coffered designs showing chrysanthemum heads enclosed in squares. The borders can feature Chinese wave and fret patterns or flowering vines.

Wool pile Khotan rugs have a cotton warp and colored wool or cotton weft and are usually made with the asymmetrical knot. Field colors can be blue, yellow, or white, as well as the usual red.

Pure wool pile and cotton warp.
