Our Green Mosaic Table is a masterpiece of Pietra Dura art, also known as "Florentine Mosaic". This technique consists in laying images and ornaments from flakes of hard stones such as agate, chalcedony, jasper, lapis lazuli, as well as mother-of-pearl and coral.
In contrast to the classic art of mosaic, which consists of colored cubes or pins, the Pietra Dura technique uses precisely fitted moldings that correspond to the larger fragments of the composition and are fixed with mastic putty. Finished mosaics are then sanded, resulting in a particularly resistant and durable surface.
The pietra dura craft reached its heyday in the 16th century, especially in Florence. The largest collection of Pietra Dura objects is in the Medici Chapel (Cappella dei Principi) in the Church of San Lorenzo in Florence. This technique also found its way to India and the Taj Mahal was decorated with it.
