The Kalasha of Chitral, or simply Kalasha, are an ethnic group living in the Hindu Kush region of Pakistan, in the Rukmu, Mumuret and Biriu valleys. They are also called Kasivo by a neighboring people, the Nuristani. The Chitral-Kalasha are probably a very old Dardic people, the proper name of their language is Kalasha-mun. Their extremely European appearance is considered unique, especially for the region in Central Asia. The Chitral-Kalasha often have light skin and light hair, as well as a different eye color.

Many Kalasha therefore trace their ancestry to descendants of Greek settlers, or descendants of Greek soldiers in the army of Alexander the Great. Finds of ancient artifacts attest to a Greek presence in the Hindu Kush region, but there is evidence of a much earlier existence of the Kalasha, well before Alexander's invasion of Persia. Other theories of origin refer to cultural and religious similarities to Greek or other European peoples. This leads to the hypothesis of a more or less direct descent from the Proto-Indo-Europeans.
