The tanbur (also tambur) is an Afghan three-string long-necked lute with mother-of-pearl and bone inlay.

The tanbour has been known for two thousand years. However, it only achieved its current sacred status in the 15th century, since then it has not been used for profane music or entertainment. The tanbur is often played in conjunction with the frame drum Daf.
