history of the object
In the Punjab province of Pakistan, the craft of making jewelry is done by a specific group of artisans. These people inherit the skills through direct lineage from father to son. Precious and semi-precious stones are not only worn for fashion purposes, but they are also worn under the prescription of astrologers and spiritual leaders to protect the wearer from evil.
It cannot be ruled out that such enamel jewelery was also made in other urban centers of what was once north India, but Multan in is clearly proven to be an important place of production.
Particularly popular with Pashtun nomads in southern Afghanistan are the large rectangular plaques known as (amulets). The Emile jewelery from Multan is valued in Afghanistan just as highly as Turkmen jewellery. The amulets mentioned are usually enamelled in a blue color and can be found individually. The offered piece with three amulets is a special rarity.
The enamel technique of these pieces is that of pit enamel. The silver background is excavated with gravers, the glass flow is poured into the "pits".
