Antique Islamic Sumatran Pedang Palembang Indonesian Sword 18th/19th Century Century.
This long sword from Klewang or Pedang has a chased sheet brass scabbard over a wooden base; a curved, single-edged blade; a handle covered with finely chased and engraved brass; and a pommel of beautifully carved and openwork horn.
The blade is made of damascened or irrigated iron with Islamic writing from the Koran.
Such klewangs appear to have been used in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and what is now southern Thailand (but was the Islamic Sultanate of Patani). They were probably manufactured at several locations and then traded elsewhere, making it difficult to determine the exact place of manufacture. This example has decorative motifs incorporated into the brass trim reminiscent of wood carvings at Lampung, South Sumatra.
The example here is in excellent condition. The blade fits perfectly in the scabbard. The brasswork is exceptional.
