The Tuareg inhabit a large area, covering almost all of the central and western Sahara and the north-central Sahel. They are probably descended from the ancient Libyan people of the Garamante kingdom described by Herodotus. Tuareg are mostly nomads. For over two millennia, the Tuareg have engaged in the Trans-Saharan caravan trade, connecting the major cities on the southern edge of the Sahara to the north coast of Africa (Mediterranean) via five desert trade routes.
This beautiful bag was brought to Tombouctou by the Tuareg artist when he came to the city from the deep Sahara Desert. The region's nomadic Tuareg occasionally come from the desert to buy supplies, sell their handicrafts, and visit friends and relatives.
